As an aside, in our summary of the various openings a few weeks ago, an anonymous reader left a challenge: talk about the prints that have a noticeable striping effect. Well, we found them. A handful of the prints in Hido’s show have visible banding lines that cut across the large light colored areas of sky, a pixelated remnant from the printer I imagine. Several visitors in the gallery noticed these lines while I was there, so this was a problem that was identifiable by anyone who looks closely.

I’d categorize this as a minor distraction, but one that would give me pause if I had my wallet out; that said, I’m sure the problems can easily be corrected for those who fall in love with one of the banded prints. Thank you DLK for pointing out the print issues. While Silverstein swears that these are analog prints, they have a strong digital feel. The banding is readily apparent, and usually a telltale sign of digital printing. There are also various smaller digital artifacts in the tonal gradations of the prints.

Just look closely. One could speculate that the banding is the result of lines in the windshields through which Mr.

A book or show often comes together much later in his process, sometimes years later, as Hido sifts through various photographs on his desk or dash and finds the startling connections between them.

A Road Divided is a strong example of this process: the book is a collection of magnetic images that form a relationship when they meet each other. Individually, these images might point in various directions, but together, they form a narrative and a path forward. First edition, first printing. Photographically illustrated paper-covered boards; no dust jacket as issued. Photographs by Todd Hido. Out of print. Sold out upon publisher’s announcement. From the publisher: „Nazraeli Press is pleased to announce Todd Hido’s new book of landscape photographs, A Road Divided, in which the artist again focuses his attention on the American landscape. Driving lonely roads on the outskirts of cities, Hido creates poignant images filled with inexplicable gravity, cinematic scenes of places that somehow exist in our collective memory.

In these new pictures, Hido demonstrates his fluidity within the daytime realm, putting aside the harder edge that characterizes his night work by photographing through veils of rain or ice. Delicately, potently, embracing the beauty of the pictorial, Hido’s new pictures present an image plane that is often fully disintegrated, recalling impressionist painting.

With an unquestionably modern effect, he often frames the compositions from inside his car, photographing straight through the windshield, using it as an additional lens and bringing a sense of timing and moment to these stationary scenes.

Currently living in China, German photographer Michael Wolf grew up in Canada, Europe and the USA before moving to Hong Kong in where he worked as a contract photographer for Stern magazine for eight years. Since he has been concentrating on his own projects, most of which focus on life in megacities, documenting the architecture and domestic culture of cities, and exploring the density of city life.

Todd Hido is an American contemporary artist and photography currently based in San Francisco. Each photograph is shot through the windshield of his car, often through rain or fog as he intentionally waited for darker clouds to roll in before taking the picture. By doing so he shows the landscapes in a way that the viewer may be familiar with — in a way they might see things through their own car window or windshield.

Another similarity is that both photographs are prone to choose film when it comes to taking their images. Although he uses a digital camera to first find the shot and plan how he wants to capture the building, Wolf uses a large format camera, which is clear in the amount of detail in his architectural images. The condensation and rain on his windshield gets captured along with the view, leaving the landscape itself both in sharp focus and indistinct.

Another difference between the two is the contrast between the possible meanings behind each series. Through this illusion he found he was able to convey what people experience in megacities, especially in regards to the lack of lateral space in Hong Kong. Magical Urbanism. Booker, M.

In the Informing Contexts module, I experimented with taking photographs, during a gale, through my window. The images were regarded by others as successful, but I was not so sure however, two of them were included in my final portfolio. In the spirit of further experimentation, and producing a large amount of varied work in the first stage of the Final Major Project, I plan to continue this work both through my window, and through my car windscreen, to try to reveal the essence of Skye.

After all, the weather is such that I spend many days looking through my windows at murky and dank weather. Many visitors and locals must also have memories of wet days on Skye! Two photographers that have used this technique are Todd Hido in works such as Roaming and A Road Divided :. In researching these two photographers and their work I came across some interesting examples of their images and insights into their practice and how they describe their approach and intent.

Sensations are intangible, I try to organise them through the act of photography. Its mechanical attention to details, its dependence on the referent — the object of its scrutiny — is what marks it as totally different from the other arts. However, as I have said in this Journal before I see the world and photography differently. Yes, photography can be about an object, but for me a photography reveals much about the photographer and their view of the world.
