One of the reasons is the very limited functionality, essentially only basic READ and WRITE commands are available. In existing applications it is common that data is either transformed before transmission or after reception leading to additional data copies and overhead. The goal of this project is to make RDMA aware of basic data types and based on this introduce new functionality, such as smart gather-scatter engine, filtering, or other transformations.
To this end, the student is going to develop a prototype implementation on an FPGA to extend an existing FPGA-based RDMA network card. These components are available to the student as a basis for their work. The student first identifies potential use cases and their requirements.
